The Power of Exercise & Nutrition in Cardiac Rehabilitation

By Neville Lewis, Founder of Body Heart and Mind

For over 15 years, I have worked in the field of GP Exercise Referral and Cardiac Rehabilitation, helping older adults and individuals with medical conditions regain strength, mobility, and confidence. Through my experience, I have seen firsthand that exercise alone is not enough—a successful recovery requires a holistic approach that includes nutrition, movement, and behavioral changes.

In 2015, I co-authored a study titled “Feasibility and Impact of a Combined Supervised Exercise and Nutritional-Behavioral Intervention following Bariatric Surgery,” published in the Journal of Obesity. This study explored how a structured 8-week program combining supervised exercise, nutritional guidance, and behavioral coaching could significantly improve recovery outcomes for individuals post-surgery.

The findings confirmed what I have always believed: rehabilitation is more than just physical exercise—it is about rebuilding a person’s entire approach to health.

Why a Holistic Approach Matters in Cardiac Rehabilitation

Many older adults recovering from heart disease, stroke, or other cardiovascular conditions face significant challenges in regaining their health. While traditional cardiac rehab programs focus primarily on exercise, we now know that integrating nutrition and lifestyle modifications leads to even greater long-term success.

Exercise Improves Heart Function – Regular movement strengthens the heart, improves circulation, and reduces the risk of future cardiac events.

Nutrition Fuels Recovery – Eating the right foods can lower inflammation, manage weight, and support heart health.

Behavioral Support Creates Lasting Change – Changing habits, staying motivated, and receiving professional guidance lead to sustainable improvements in health.

The Body Heart and Mind Approach

At Body Heart and Mind, we apply these principles to every client’s rehabilitation journey. We provide home-based programs designed to:

✔️ Restore Strength & Mobility – Tailored exercise plans for older adults with medical conditions.

✔️ Manage Heart Disease & Chronic Illness – Programs for individuals recovering from stroke, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.

✔️ Offer Personalized Nutrition Guidance – Helping clients make simple, sustainable dietary changes for better health.

✔️ Support Behavioral Change – Teaching clients how to build lifelong habits that support their well-being.

Real Results, Real Transformations

Since implementing this holistic approach, we have helped countless individuals regain strength, confidence, and independence. Many of our clients have gone from struggling to walk up the stairs to walking unaided, enjoying an active life again, and reducing their dependence on medication.

“I was told I would never walk normally again after my stroke, but with Body Heart and Mind’s support, I can now take long walks with my family. It’s not just about exercise—it’s about reclaiming my life.”

Margaret, 72.
